Narrative summary
In 2010, I joined the laboratory of Prof. Sylwia Jafra, my first mentor, at the University of Gdańsk in Poland to work on my MSc project and later as a research assistant. As I delved deeper into environmental microbiology and plant-microbe interactions, I became increasingly fascinated by the field, I expanded my knowledge and skills, particularly in molecular biology, metabolomics and virology, while also building a scientific network through a series of internships and study visits.
In 2016, I began my PhD under the guidance of Prof. Jos Raaijmakers and Prof. Dr Paolina Garbeva. My research focused on disease-suppressive soils that naturally protect crops from diseases via microbiomes. This project was part of a larger consortium that included universities (Wageningen University and Research, Leiden University) and companies (BASF and BaseClear). Through this collaboration, I honed my project management and teamwork skills. The multidisciplinary nature of the project provided opportunities to work closely with leading scientists in plant-microbe interactions and bioinformatics, as well as with farmers and agricultural companies. My PhD research resulted in four first-author publications, and I am currently finalizing the last publication. During this time, I developed expertise in metagenomics, metabolomics, data analysis and bioinformatics, which remain my primary tools of research. This experience also shifted my perspective on soil from a source of microbes to a dynamic, living system. Since then, my work has focused on microbiomes and understanding microbes within the context of their microbiomes.
After gaining my PhD in 2021, I embarked on a one-year postdoctoral project at the Biology Centre in Budweis, Czechia with Dr Roey Angel, followed by another one-year project at the Institute of Biology Leiden in the Netherlands with Prof. Martijn Bezemer. In both positions, I researched environmental microbiomes related to insects and explored the ecological interactions between microbiomes, hosts and the environment. These two years allowed me to apply my skills and knowledge, setting up methods for metabolite measurement and designing new approaches for microbiome analysis.
In 2022, I obtained an MSCA postdoctoral fellowship to work on enhancing microbiomes in agriculture in dr Victor Cárrion’s lab in Málaga, Spain. My successful application scored 98% and I relocated to Spain at the end of 2023 and began working at the Institute for Mediterranean and Subtropical Horticulture. My current project focuses on amplifying the potential of soil microbiomes to mitigate environmental stress. The research focus of this institution aligns perfectly with my scientific line, offering valuable opportunities for advancing research in sustainable agriculture and microbiome-based plant protection.
During my career I worked in academic institutions in four European countries following development of my ideas in understanding microbiomes. I put a lot of pressure on international collaborations within academia, but also with companies (BASF, Syngenta, Koppert). The collaborations resulted in a series of invited seminars and research projects. Whenever its possible I take part in organizing outreach events, like science festivals and other popular science activities e.g. translations of articles or talks. I have supervised 14 BSc level students, six MSc level and co-supervised three PhD students, often after the defended MSc thesis I was an intermediate in finding further PhD positions or jobs in companies. Openness and transparency in science is very important to me which is why I take part in PCI (Peer Community Initiative) I am an active reviewer for several leading journals in my field. An important recognition for me was becoming a senior editor for BMC Microbiome (Impact Factor: 13.8).
